Identification:
Right-sided flatfish with rough upper surface and large mouth. Unlike the dab, the lateral line curves only slightly above the pectoral fin.

Breeding:
In the North Sea, breeding occurs during January to May in depths of 150-200 m. Females produce up to 300,000 eggs. Larvae move to the bottom before metamorphosis is complete. Sexually mature at about 3 years (25 cm).

Habitat:
Bottom-living in 10-400 m of water, on soft ground.

Food:
Small fishes, brittlestars and crustaceans.

Range:
Throughout UK waters.
