Identification:
Typical snadell profile, with long elongated body with rounded cross-section, long pointed head, with protruding lower jaw. The mouth has no teeth on the palate. No skin ridges, and scales only present on the rear portion of the body. Unlike other sandeels, both the dorsal and anal fins are wavy in outline. The latersal line has small branches at right angles to the main canal, especially below. Tends to be more brownish in colouration than the other sandeels.

Breeding:
This occurs from March through into September.

Habitat:
Found offshore over sand or shelly gravels.

Food:
Feeds on plankton and small crustaceans.

Range:
Found all around the UK, but more so on western shores.
